Cover Design and Format

For the cover of our Culture magazine, my partner Juan and I created (drew out) what we wanted the specific format of our magazine to be. We decided on a masthead for our publication that will always remain consistent. The only thing that would ever change on the cover of our magazines is the cover photos on the different issues. Culture will obviously be written at the top of the cover in bold font, but we have not quite decided what font is right for our magazine yet. However, we have decided that on the bottom right side of our magazine cover, there will be a graphic of different colored hands, representing different races and ethnicities, reaching upwards. Juan and I will gather some of our friends to take this photo, that symbolizes unity and representation of all races, minorities especially. The cover page is an introduction to our creation, Culture, so Juan and I wanted to make sure that it has meaning and appeals to our target audience. As for our Table of Contents, we wanted to place an ad on the second page of that two page spread. Our ads will appeal to the certain race or ethnicity's culture that each issue is specifically pertaining to. Our two page spreads in our separate magazines will follow the same format, title in the upper top half of page one, with perhaps a short description of what is being discussed in the article. There will be a photo that represents the story being focused on the top half of page two, while the actual writing with appear on the bottom halves of both the right and left pages of the two page spread.

Layout

For the layout of our Culture magazine, my partner Juan and I decided that it would be best to formulate our entertainment magazine layout similarly to highly acclaimed entertainment mags, for example, Entertainment Weekly. Entertainment Weekly is an American magazine, published by Meredith Corporation, that covers filmtelevisionmusicBroadway theatre, books and popular cultureDifferent from celebrity-focused publications like Us WeeklyPeople (a sister magazine to EW), and In Touch WeeklyEW primarily concentrates on entertainment media news and critical reviews. We want our magazine to review films, music, television shows, and any other form of media that is positively impactful to a certain culture. Of course the culture that will be focused on in each issue will be different but every issue of our magazine will feature a "Must List" (we will rename it with something more original). For example, how Black Panther, the widely successful film, affects black culture in terms of fashion and music. Since the target audience for Culture is minorities ranging from 15-35, whatever is on the 'Must List' should have the same target audience as our publication.

The Genre

I was thinking that an Entertainment magazine would be the best thing for me to do. My partner and I both agreed that Entertainment is a big umbrella, large enough for us to make two separate magazine issues with similar ideas that can be modified to entail what we are both passionate about and interested in, whilst still sticking to the genre of the magazine, and the target audience. I am still confused about where to start in terms of creating the magazine and what rules to follow working with a partner. I thought I would start by researching what all great Entertainment magazines should entail, and two things that I consistently saw on the cover and inside of many Entertainment mags such as People, Entertainment Weekly, and US Weekly, was gossip and celebrities, or rather, gossip about celebrities. That's when I decided that I was going to do things differently. I don't want to create a gossip magazine that leaves no impact on the reader. I want to create written art that provides bold statements, facts, ad social commentary that is constructive and necessary.
